The selected candidate will oversee the transport function. The main purpose of the role is to develop and implement the Transport strategy, focusing on meeting daily cane delivery targets, ensuring efficiency, cost-effectiveness in transport operations, and promoting safety across all transport activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Business:

  • Managing the execution, direction, and coordination of all transport activities, including preparing and managing budgets, organizing schedules and routes, ensuring fleet safety, compliance with legal requirements, and clarifying driver responsibilities.
  • Ensuring timely and safe delivery of fresh sugarcane to the factory, while observing road safety and maximizing fleet efficiency in a cost-effective manner.
  • Ensuring the company fleet complies with traffic rules and regulations.
  • Developing transportation relationships, negotiating prices, contracting outsourced transporters, ensuring vehicle safety, and enforcing compliance with traffic rules and regulations.

Monitoring and Control:

  • Monitoring and evaluating transport-related costs, advising management on strategies to improve fleet effectiveness and efficiency, and formulating plans to reduce fuel pilferage, fuel consumption, and maintenance costs.
  • Managing the transport workshop and spare parts stores, ensuring adequate parts supply, safeguarding against pilferage and extended downtimes, and ensuring workshop staff operate at optimum efficiency.
  • Allocating and recording resources and movements using the transport planning and monitoring system.
  • Communicating effectively with user departments and responding to their requirements.
  • Implementing transport strategies to mitigate weather-related challenges, especially during rainy seasons.
  • Developing standards for loading, transportation, and asset management practices.

People:

  • Responsible for recruitment, training, development, performance management, communication, staff interaction, and retention of the transport team, in coordination with HR.
  • Setting annual goals for officers and supervisors and conducting performance evaluations.
  • Maintaining direct, person-to-person contact with all staff.
  • Providing training and sensitization for drivers and loaders.
  • Implementing departmental incentives to ensure maximum efficiency.

Requirements:

  • A degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering (Auto), Logistics, Transport, or any other relevant field, with at least 5 years of relevant work experience. Experience in a supervisory role in fleet management, especially within the agricultural industry, is an advantage.
  • Basic business management skills and computer literacy.

Additionally, the candidate should have:

  • Proficiency in IT packages and electronic communication methods.
  • Tact, diplomacy, and calmness when dealing with drivers and loaders.
  • Strong analytical skills with good numerical and financial acumen.
  • Excellent geographical knowledge.
  • Strong people management and coordination skills.
  • Excellent negotiation and communication abilities.
  • Extensive knowledge of the transportation industry.
  • Willingness and ability to work long hours.
